Back in 2020 I started a thread on Twitter of all about the mystery tv shows I was binge watching. I moved it over to Bluesky when I deleted my Twitter archive and it is about time it made to my blog.

Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •3/28/20
I’ve been binge watching mystery shows since late January when I was cooped up at home sick with the flu and bronchitis. Poirot, Miss Marple, Brokenwood Mysteries, Vera, Shetland, Rosemary and Thyme, Agatha Raisin, Queens of Mystery, Shakespeare and Hathaway among others.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •3/28/20
I’m finding cozies quite reassuring, as the murderer is almost always caught and justice is restored. • Might have to write about this binge at some point.
Loch Ness and Father Brown
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 4/4/20 I have now watched Loch Ness which dropped a lot of threads, the original season of Father Brown from 1974 and 3 of the 7 seasons of the modern adaptation. I once tried to read the original Chesterton mysteries but didn’t connect with them. I’m quite fond of the adaptations.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 4/11/20 I have now finished watching all 7 new seasons of Father Brown and I’m really going to miss Kembleford, although FB is as dangerous to be around as Jessica Fletcher!
Inspector Morse

Ana Coqui @@anacoqui • 4/12/20 It is both sobering and surprising that I’m about the same age as John Thaw was when started playing Morse.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •4/15/20 So I love how in these Brit mysteries everyone has been in something else. Inspector Lynley was a Morse bad guy and today Father Brown’s best sidekick Mrs. McCreedy is actually Morse’s half-sister Joyce.
Ana Coqui @@anacoqui • 4/16/20 Now on season 8 of Morse and John Thaw looks better than he did at the start of the series…
Endeavour
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •4/18/20 Those of you who told me I would enjoy Endeavour, you were absolutely right. It is fabulous. I saw half of the second episode of the first season once and was so lost I turned it off. Glad I came back. Love the characterization and the mysteries.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 4/23/20 Just finished the 6th season and it has continued to get better and better through out. Great story, character development and great setting.

Foyle’s War, Murder in Suburbia, My life is Murder, London Kills and Manhunt

Ana Coqui @@anacoqui •5/5/20 So I watched about half the seasons in Foyle’s War before I needed a break. I rewatched Murder in Suburbia to pass the time (it isn’t good). But I just inhaled My Life is Murder with Lucy Lawless as retired detective roped back in to sold stalled cases. Love it. (Acorn TV).
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 5/7/20 I’ve finished two seasons of London Kills, and it was really suspenseful series, and I curious to see where it goes. I also just finished Manhunt, a drama based on a series of true crimes and it was very intense but satisfying.
Mallorca Files & The Coroner
Ana Coqui @@anacoqui • 5/8/20 If you are a fan of Murder in Paradise, check out the Mallorca Files! Similar cozy premise ex-pat cops exiled on a sunny island, culture clashes, fun mysteries. The chemistry between the leads is fun & light.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •5/11/20 Just finished two seasons of The Coroner, which I really liked. Small town/return to hometown, divorced Coroner lives with her mom & daughter, solves mysteries with her now-married-to-someone-else former High School sweetheart. Very interesting dynamics, great friendship.

Death in Paradise, Mrs. Bradley Mysteries, Colombo.

Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •5/29/20 Tried a few shows that didn’t click with me, so I went back to Death in Paradise and I’m glad I did because the one detective I didn’t like (Humphrey) was finally switched out and I enjoyed the most recent seasons a whole lot more.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 6/6/20 Watched all the Mrs. Bradley mysteries and thought they were a hoot. I need more older heroines who just don’t give a fuck.
Ana Coqui @anacoqui • 6/7/20 I have started Colombo. I’ve seen episodes over the years but never many. So far l’m enjoying it.
Colombo and Murder She Wrote
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 6/9/20 I’m amused by how many repeat actors there are in just the first couple of seasons of Columbo and how folks are out there establishing alibis using pay phones, portable radios, automated calling machines and in this episode an ice cream truck.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 6/25/20 I gave up on Columbo after a few seasons, his shtick never changed and I got very bored. I switched over to Murder She Wrote and finished some episodes I missed before it left for IMBDtv. I love that she changes how she solves crimes!

Bletchley Circle & Frankie Drake Mysteries

Ana Coqui @@anacoqui •6/25/20 I’m finally watching Bletchley Circle which l’m loving. I didn’t realize it was post war or I would have watched it sooner.
Ana Coqui @anacoqui • 7/11/20 I watched and loved all the Bletchley Circle series including the San Fran one. Really enjoyed the friendships in it. I just finished the first season of Frankie Drake Mysteries (free on prime till the end of the month). Loved the 1920 Toronto settings and the friendships.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •7/11/20 I did roll my eyes at Hemingway being a 2ndary
Murder Call and A Lady Vanishes.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 7/26/20 Finished another mystery series on Prime, 2 seasons, Australian from the late 90s, Murder Call. Enjoyable ensemble cast. Tessa pretty much solves all the cases but I particularly enjoyed the cranky forensics officer Lance. (CWs: Homophobia, transphobia in a few episodes).
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •7/26/20 Just finished the BBC 2013 The Lady Vanishes which was fantastic. Really great tension and menace although the moral: English people should stick together wasn’t great. It rightly should be, learn the language you fool.

City Homicide and Supernatural

Ana Coqui @@anacoqui • 8/10/20 Been watching lots of different things. City Homicide (Australian series on Prime) had some really great arcs and some terrible ones before I just stopped watching. Might go back and see what happens to a couple of the detectives I care about. #anacoquimystery
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 8/10/20 I’ve started watching Supernatural (Netflix) at k2’s insistence and I’m enjoying it a lot. Has the puzzle solving and suspense l’m looking for although I already know they are going to fridge too many women. #anacoquimystery
Endeavour & Van Der Valk
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 8/10/20 So does Endeavour (PBS) but I still loved season 7. Perfectly operatic and is really building toward the Morse we know so well while being clearly superior. Lots of masterful small moments. Can we have a show following Inspector Strange? I love him! #anacoquimystery
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 10/5/20 I watched Van Der Valk Mysteries via PBS passport and I quite enjoyed it. Anti-social detective with a strong team and lots of emotional baggage solves murders in Amsterdam.

Brokenwood Mystery & Whistable Pearl

Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 7/1/21 I’m back on my Mystery BSB with a discounted Acorn subscription. So far I’ve watched the newest seasons of Brokenwood Mysteries, which has gotten a little less fun although I really like the new Maori cop.
Ana Coqui @anacoqui • 7/1/21 Whitstable Pearl about a white single mom/former cop/chef/freelance detective uncovering secrets in her small English fishing community with the help of a grieving and cynical black cop. Very good twists, good ensemble.
Mystery Road and the Sommerdahl Mysteries
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •7/1/21 Mystery Road, southern Australian. Two young men (one white, one black) go missing on a massive cattle station. A detective of aboriginal descent is sent to assist the white chief of police. They unearth some deep secrets. Good drama, tension and mystery.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 7/4/21 The Sommerdahl Murders Danish, 2s, Acorn.Riveted to rom drama, but can’t imagine anyone would sympathize with sad sack Sommerdahl, who starts the series with a fab wife Marianne, who he neglected for 25 yrs. I did root for Flemming the silver fox BF who has loved her from afar.

Midsommer Murders, My Life is Murder & Janet King

Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 11/26/21 I’ve been back on my murder show binging, watched season 22 of Midsomer Murders and season 2 of My life is Murder and I simply adore them both. It is tough to find something that is episodic enough for me and still has good character growth.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 11/26/21 Tried Janet King and while I really liked the characters I’m just not in the mood for season long story lines. Might try Dalgleish but I prefer contemporary set mysteries.
Madame Blanc, Midsommer Murders, Queens of Mystery, Vera and Shetland and Dodds and McDonald

Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 11/26/21 I also watched the first season of Madame Blanc and found it quite fun. Basically a Brit cozy in the south of France.
Ana Coqui & @anacoqui • 3/13/22 I’ve caught on the latest seasons of Midsomer Murders, Queens of Mystery & Vera. I’m not quite caught up on Shetland.
Ana Coqui @anacoqui •3/13/22 I have loved Dodds and McDonald. I love the contrast between the leads and how they like each other in a grudging way. I quite enjoy something set in Bath, not London or tiny village.
Sister Boniface & Murder in Provence
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 3/13/22
I also quite enjoyed Sister Boniface
Mysteries despite my not connecting to the most recent Father Brown seasons.
I like how the resident detective doesn’t resist her aid at all because she helps him clear cases and he is not threatened at by her.
Ana Coqui @@anacoqui • 3/13/22
I’m halfway through Murder in Provence which is fun. I love both the leads and as long as you accept that all the “French people” are being played by Brits without any attempt affecting French accents, it is delightful. I like the chemistry, the scenery and mysteries.

Only Murders in the Building, Reacher and Annika

Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 7/11/22 I recently been catching up on the later seasons of Murder in Paradise and started on Only Murders in the Building which I’m quite enjoying. I also watched Season 1 of Reacher which was hilarious, violent and fascinating. Will watch more!
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 7/30/22 Just binged watched Annika on PBS and I really enjoyed it. I loved the silliness of her camera asides and her literature musings. I enjoyed the awkward relationships with her team and just the stark Scottish seaside scenery!
Magpie Murders, Three Pines, Seven Women and a murder

Ana Coqui @@anacoqui •12/18/22 I’ve really enjoyed Magpie Murders on PBS based on Horowitz’s book great detecting duo, story within a story, fabulous double casting and engrossing mystery
Ana Coqui @anacoqui • 12/18/22 I’ve been watching Three Pines on Prime based on the Louise Penny Inspector Gamache series Creepy, horror movie -like cinematography, great conflicted characters with difficult relationships and I love the unflinching focus on the abuses faced with Native peoples.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •12/30/22 Seven Women and A Murder (Italian with English subtitles, Netflix) 7 women snowed in with dead man they all had motives to kill. Bordering on Farce, it is delightfully broadly comedic and engrossing. Great choice if you enjoyed Glass Onion or Knives Out.
Poker Face, Dalgleish
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui •1/29/23 Watched the 1st episode of Poker Face and I’ll definitely be watching more. I like Charlie’s burnout persona, how she is content getting bye, until she calls bullshit on something that happens to her best friend.
Ana Coqui @ @anacoqui • 6/7/23 I’ve finally got around to watching Dalgliesh S1 & S2 (70’s UK, WM MC) and I really liked it . The murders are intense and the relationships even better. Costuming and period details are great! CWs: murder, racism, homophobia, depression, grief, mental illness

Deadloch

Ana Coqui ^ @anacoqui •8/2/23 Deadloch (AmzPrime). I’m so glad I hung in past the first episode when I just didn’t know if the dark humor and the vulgarity was going to work for me & yet it did. I grew attached to the town, the detectives & engrossed in the investigation. Cw: murder, homophobia, PT: DV
